| Today at work, I was slacking off like any other day just browsing digg.com as always when I came across an interesting article titled "The End of Empathy". click here if you want to check it out. While it tries to explain how people have grown to be less caring and intolerant, a reader comment really struck my attention and that is, people grow to be apathetic when doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, major media destroy information and religion destroys spirituality. I found this to be food for thought that really nailed the spot. | | |
| Anyone who lives around the GTA all but knows by now that York University has gone on strike (although what else is new? they're always on strike lol). This probably has no relevance to me since I never went to York and I recently graduated university BUT there was no way I couldn't not talk about this. There's a bunch of issues that led to the strike and while I'd love to talk about all of them, it'd take up too much space so click here for the details. What I DO want to talk about though is the issue that's important to us all......money. We all love money and during tough economic times, we sure could use more.......I know i do. Anyways, the current deal that was offered to the part-time TA's that went on strike was an almost 10% increase in pay. Apparently that just isn't good enough because they'd rather want a 41% increase in pay..........WTF!!! In my opinion, these nut jobs are clearly out of touch with reality and by all estimations, have never worked a job in their life. I can guarantee you that if you work somewhere in the private sector and you went up to your boss and asked for a 41% increase in salary, he/she would laugh in your face and would then possibly fire your ass on the spot. Reports say most TA's make about $17,386/year and while that figure sounds like shit, lets not forget that while you might be a grad student or going for your PhD, A) you're still a student and B) you work part time so of course, you won't get the benefits of full-time workers. Don't like it? there's other schools you can TA for. Most undergrads that work part-time during school are working some shit retail job that pays barely above minimum wage that works you like a dog so if you wanna talk about how to pay for high tuition costs, textbook costs, rent, etc, know that there's people who have worse financial woes than you. So then, what do I make of all this? An obvious indication of idealism gone wrong. Sure we all want to do better for ourselves and yes, it's IDEAL to have your pay increase in relation to inflation. But that's just being ideal and far from being realistic. In my ideal world, I'd get rid of unions because while they once stood for something, nowadays it seems that all unions do is promote laziness (because who the hell works hard when there's almost no chance you'll get fired).Unfortunately, unions won't be going away anytime soon and that's just the reality of things.

| History was made as Barack Obama became the first African-American president elect. After 2 long years of campaigning, I'm glad it's finally over (considering how elections in Canada last barely over a month). I couldn't be more excited to see Obama get elected but now the real work will start. There's plenty of pressure on him now and it'll be interesting to see him tackle all of the current problems.

| Well that's a wrap. Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States. Think tonight, hope was restored back into the world.......and tomorrow, stock prices will skyrocket. It'll be a celebration on Wall Street!

| Call centre worker caught out by boss after posting 'sickie' plan on 'Facebook'
After a particularly heavy night out Kyle Doyle decided that he would phone in sick and treat himself to a day in bed.
To celebrate his day off Kyle, a 21-year-old call centre worker, updated the status on his Facebook page to reflect the fact.
Unfortunately for Kyle, his online boast did not go unnoticed by his employers....

Well, there have been reports that this story is a hoax. Whatever the truth is though, there's a lesson to be learned here: don't add your boss on Facebook. Because no matter how 'close' you are with your boss, your boss is still your boss. And if you're dumb enough to post your entire life story on facebook (including the fact that you faked calling in sick), your boss will probably make decisions that are best for the company rather than for you. However, if you ARE going to add your boss and everyone else in the office, it probably isn't a good idea to post up pictures or write blogs/notes that'll make you the talk of the office. | | |
